The Healing Thermal Waters
 

There are 25 springs located in Bagni di Lucca; the thermal waters, used for therapeutic cures since ancient times, have attracted the attention of chemists, geochemists, and geologists, especially in the last century. These waters will be piped into Villa Fiori’s water supply. The waters are made up of calcium-sulphate and originate from seepage underground, which rises through the rocks and ground strata.

Based on thermodynamic calculations, the water is filtered underground from a depth of 2-3 km, reaching a temperature of 70-75°C (159-165°F). It surfaces rapidly between fractured stones at 54°C (130°F) (Spring of Bagni di Caldi). The chemical characteristics show that underground processes are complex, involving many minerals from the rocky surface. The waters deep below balance sulphate of calcium, carbonate, phyllosilicate, and silica—minerals found in the rocks of the Val di Lima. These waters will be piped into Villa Fiori’s water supply to provide their healing benefits.

The dissolution of rock salt in saturated conditions with carbon dioxide, lime, kaolin, and dolomite explains the high sodium/chloride and low calcium/sulphate levels characteristic of Bagni di Lucca waters. Isotope studies show the sulphur in the sulphate comes from minerals in the rocks. This blend of mineral salts and purified water has been recognized for centuries as some of Europe’s most therapeutic. These waters will be piped into Villa Fiori’s water supply to bring their healing qualities directly to the community.
